Von Sudenfed: Fledermaus Can't Get It

Reviewed By: Maarten Schiethart
Label: Domino
Format: 12"

Mark E Smith first joined the ranks of Mouse on Mars for the 'Wipe That Sound' single on Sonig, which is included under the new title of 'That Sound Wiped' on their debut album 'Trommatic Reflexxions', which has come out on Domino. To coincide with that here's Von Südenfed's first shot at the dance floor with four takes of 'Fledermaus', which is German for 'bat'.

I find it hard to pick a favourite out of the four mixes. 'Fledermaus' is a strong track already; the original cut for the album seems to be the Tromhead cut. On the A-Side it is followed by a banging and screaming version from one Dr. Dong-Hun Chung.

Max Tundra rips it up on the B-Side and in inescapable fashion goes from atmospheric breakbeats to clubby house beats. The Hooloo Rock version heads into a new dimension to close off this little quartet.

Appearing in a most beautiful sleeve, the EP is an essential purchase even when it's hard to make any logic out of what Mark E Smith shouts. Treasure the concept of listening to the Marquis to understand, as you dance.
