Richard Barbieri first came to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s as the keyboardist and synthesiser player in new wave pioneers Japan and their brief 1989–1991 reincarnation as Rain Tree Crow,

He has since worked as the keyboard player in the progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, which he joined in 1993, and since 2004 has also run a much acclaimed solo career in which he has released three albums to date, 'Things Buried' (2005), 'Stranger Inside' (2008) and this year's 'Planets + Persona'.

Darren Aston photographed Richard Barbieri exclusively for Pennyblackmusic on September 29th at a rare solo gig at the Church of St Margaret of Antioch in Liverpool.
