‘Like John Candy’ is this year’s holiday gift from Nottingham indie favourites Lorna who have been together over ten years and have played in the UK, Europe and the US. They have released five albums and performed with the likes of the Psychedelic Furs, Mark Gardener, Evan Dando, the American Analog Set, Midlake and the Pernice Brothers. They have been compared to Teenage Fanclub, Belle and Sebastian, Stereolab and the Velvet Underground. Wrapped in rich, colourful layers and tied in a bow of classic Christmas nostalgia, ‘Like John Candy’ draws influence from dreamy winter afternoons, the snow white wall of Spector sound, the spacious textures of Slowdive and the deep, crisp and even vocal arrangements of Arcade Fire. Lyrically the track pays tribute to some of the greatest on screen icons of the festive period, from Donna Reed to Phoebe Cates. The narrative also touches on important contemporary themes urging social and political tolerance and acceptance - the "lights on in our hearts." Recorded at the band’s own Winnetka Studios in Nottingham, ‘Like John Candy’ is the first Lorna song to feature all six members of the band singing. Its trumpet solo is courtesy of guest Will Banks and the track was mastered by Martin Gisborne in Vancouver. The video, starring young actor Ryan Pickard (‘Suffragette’, ‘Dad’s Army’, ‘The Brothers Grimbsy’) is a classical Christmas adventure perfectly reflecting the song’s values of tolerance and activism. Written by the band, it was filmed by Mark Rolfe and with assistance from Jamie and Debbie Pickard (also depicted as Ryan’s on screen mum) and Richard Leverton.
