Over-heavy but promising psychedelic metal/rock and roll on debut album from misfit Spanish duo, Cowboy Lovers
There is not a lot of information out there to about Cowboy Lovers. And what there is out is in Spanish. Even if you go on their Facebook page to try to find out more about them, that's largely in Spanish too. Perhaps it is because these two guys are from Spain. But what they doy say about themselves on Facebook in Englsih is “Cowboy Lovers is a duo. One of them kicks drums seriously, and the other one, tries to make noise with a guitar...” The pair are from Alicante. They are also described as being “a pair of misfits in love with the debauched powers of redemption offered by rock 'n' roll.” I wonder what that sounds like in Spanish. Initially DJs, the pair amassed an enormous music collection of psychedelia, punk and early rock and roll and more - Anything that moved them essentially. They then swapped their turntables for drums, guitar, vocals and electricity, and Cowboy Lovers was born. Soon after that they caught the attention of producer Liam Watson after being introduced by a mutual friend. Watson invited them to record their debut album at his Toerag Studios complex in East London. Cowboy Lovers are F.Pascual and H.Bardisa. They have been performing at venues and festivals all over Spain including Microsonidos in Murcia and the Low Festival in Benidorm. Their music has been described as “proto-heavy-metal-rock and roll.” Although metal fans will love it, sometimes it is a little bit too heavy as a result for my tastes, but it does have some fine moments hidden inside it. It starts on a happy note with 'Dying', which is a sort of psychedelic-metal romp but changes direction on the second track 'Jungle Megatron', which is a funky rock and roll number.' Slaves in Darkness' revisits the punk side of, say, the Damned'. 'I’m So Easy' is softer on the ears and is possibly the strongest track on here. It all comes to a crashing end with the 100mph 'Why I Can’t be Like You?’ All in all it is a good start for the Spanish lads although it is a bit too heavy in parts. They have a lot of potential and hopefully a bright future ahead of them.
