intro
Repetitive but enthralling electronica on fourth album from London-based instrumental project, Eat Lights Become Lights
Eat Lights Become Lights, the brainchild of Neil Rudd, is a sort of modern upgrade of 1970's German electronica, all robotic beats, powerful synths and minimalist composition. It’s a skill to make repetitive music without being boring. For the most part, 'Into Forever', Eat Lights’ fourth album, avoids falling into that trap. After exhilarating opener 'Velocet Vir Nesat', the work settles into more atmospheric territory. 'Bounce Synth' is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin, a five-minute variation on a theme based around a synth plinking on a pentatonic scale. The bright arpeggiated sounds on 'Shapes and Patterns' brings to mind the more musical work of the Radiophonic Workshop. The ten-minute 'Vapour Trails' takes us into atmospheric Vangelis territory, and proves to be one of the most engaging pieces on the record. 'You Are Disko' brings the pace up again, before the album marches to its final piece, another 10-minuter, brighter and more upbeat than 'Vapour Trails'. It all hangs together like seven extracts from different film soundtracks, which is no bad thing.
