Surprisingly subdued, blues-influenced ninth album from American psychedelic group, Bardo Pond
Zany monsters of psychedelic whirlwind rock music Bardo Pond were once tough experimentalists. They have, however, matured their seemingly nonsensical reverbs on this album for Britain's Fire Records. Dangerously coherent and streamlined, Bardo Pond have done away with their trademark hard, harsh and harmful noise. The belting wah wah riffs of 'Kali Yuga Blues' open this set of five songs. Only mildly rather than totally earsplitting - and aided in this by Isobel Sollenborg's nasal vocals - the whole album has a dragging blues sound. With very little in common with their art rock roots, the second half of the album tends to go on a bit. Guitarists Mike and John Gibbons have become a little too self-centered on being on a Neil Young trip, but some of the tracks gain a much wanted momentum with Sollenborg's powerful flute play. This mudbath will please old, and even former, members from the congregation, but I think it'd be unlikely to win over new ones. Drop your hair to this.
