intro
Potentially promising but ultimately unimpsiring third album from Glasgow-based folk pop act, Sparrow and the Workshop
Rendering their melodic compositions in in overwhelming fashion, Sparrow & the Workshop offer up an initially exquisite-sounding string of songs on ‘Murderopolis’. Their quintessentially British folk pop leans towards dreamy jingle jangle but gradually starts sounding heavier, as the music becomes more and more 'vagrant'. Admittedly, vagrant is the word of their own choice. 'Avalanche of Lust' just about does the job, but on the whole, 'Murderopolis' is quite dull. The vocals are far too indifferent, are accompanied by music riddled with clichés and when an exclusion to this is allowed in, like the fuzzy riff off 'Flower Bombs', it gets killed off in the mix. Instead the song ends like a mockery of U2 or Coldplay. Sparrow & the Workshop are in no way untalented, but ‘Murderopolis’ is largely unconvincing
