As a result of recent releases by Orlando Careca and also because of a Payola compilation (which featured among others the man behind Señor Coconut), there now is a major interest in Latin American Techno. You may realize by the use of the accent in Cristián Vogel's first name that his forefathers had both German and Spanish blood. 'Rescate 137' (that's the mark you'll find on beaches where Spanish is spoken) is Cristián Vogel's major label debut. Cristian Vogel crafted his skills on amongst other things a string of Sativae releases, but this NovaMute debut still surprises being a major step from the dry electro that he released previously on his own Mosqúito Records label, which operated from Brighton. I guess Mr Vogel likes the shore. The freaky edges that we had grown accustomed to in his previous work haven't really been replaced by anything else, but have matured to become deep funky twists which still manage to deliver the goods on the dance floor. The rhythms Cristián Vogel produces are similar in complexity to those of drum and bass, and just like this style, they work very well on a sound system. 'Rescate 137' reinvents electro funk. Vogel builds great loops but then realizes he's capable of more and re-constructs the entire thing back to create an edgy freakyness. The end results then sound complex and unaccessible at first, but pretty soon, you'll discover this twisted brand of funk hits you with force.
