intro
Defiant second collaboration between former Crass front man Steve Ignorant and Irish punk collective Paranoid Visions
Steve Ignorant, the former Crass front man, teams up with the Irish punk collective Paranoid Visions again, following their 2013 release 'When...?' and, after a successful tour, the release of an EP 'The Height of Ignorance' which very quickly sold out of its limited run of vinyl. Whilst those releases did not sound like the legendary English D.I.Y. anarcho punks, this one is definitely much closer to the mark. Opener 'Look Mummy Clowns' features the repetitive and creepy voice of a child repeating the title and is a full slab of old school in-your-face punk rock which hits you between the eyes after an initial shudder. It's loud, it's raw and it's exactly what you would expect from the Irish punks and a former Crass member. 'Loudmouth' continues in the same vein with its hard hitting lyric and a rawness you could compare to the Dead Kennedys' debut album 'Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables' or Henry Rollins' Black Flag and more notably the British post-punk of Killing Joke or Gang of Four. If you are a fan of any of these, then this album will please you instantly and have you reaching to crank the volume up to ten. Ignorant's 'Where is Love?' and 'Art and Craft' are very typically questioning of authority, and, whereas Crass's 'So What' questioned religion, the latter takes a swipe at the brotherhood and freemasonry and a customary and welcoming swipe at the establishment. The album closes with 'War' and contains excerpts from Penny Rimbaud's 'Banned from the Roxy', a Crass classic from the infamous 'Feeding of the Five Thousand' album. It's pretty clear the combining of these two massive punk forces will likely see further collaboration as this seems to be a match made in punk heaven.
