intro
Unique-sounding electro-pop on second album from the Vichy Government, which will appeal alike to fans of bands such as Magoo and Bearsuit, or followers of the anti-folk movement
I don’t really know how to describe The Vichy Government’s sound - the closest I can get is probably to say that it sounds something like Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)’, 'Whores in Taxis' being a collection of electro tracks with monologues spoken over the top (although these rhyme more than Luhrmann’s effort). What I can tell you with some confidence is that is that the Government’s second full-length is a treat to listen to; like the Faint with a sense of humour, or Gay Against You playing in a lounge bar. This album will no doubt appeal to anyone who likes to keep an ear pointed towards the UK's underground music scene, fans of Norwich bands like Magoo and Bearsuit, or followers of the anti-folk movement (vocalist Jamie Manners’ delivery is something akin to that of the Bobby McGee’s Jimmy McGee). For me, this is another example of us Brits showing that we can produce music which stands out on its own; 'Whores in Taxis' is a unique musical package, and manages to be so without losing any sense of fun or dropping into the muggy realms of pretentiousness. Go buy!
