This is a great album on In The Red Records...already one I know for sure that I'll be tacking on to my top 10 list for 2001. Fans of the Bellrays will already be familiar with Lisa Kekaula’s voice, and it’s this medium that really lets the depth of what she’s capable of shine. Apart from that, fans of virtually anything and everything cool, particularly in the garage-punk arena, will also be familiar with the work of Tim Kerr (Big Boys, Poison 13, Jack O’Fire, the Lord High Fixers and Monkeywrench...not to mention having his hand in a number of other production/sound engineering pies, including the Mooney Suzuki). You’ll here find him guitar-mongering at his finest with the Delegation. Someone described this to me as the ultimate make-out record, and I can’t argue with that. One way or the other you will want to bump and grind to this one, whether dancing or ahem...otherwise. Lisa makes you want to belt out every song right along with her, but this is a way more soulful avenue for her than the Bellrays. The Now Time Delegation is able to take simplicity and make it sound really BIG, and have a beautiful soul garage sound that covers, and pays homage to a lot of the greats, à la Curtis Mayfield. Kekaula has a large gospel voice that makes this truly work, and transports you back in time making it all fresh again. She is the woman that every man wants to have sex with and every woman wants to be. It’s true. I want to be her. The record sleeve dubs them as “Nina Simone played by the Animals”, among others, and that is certainly an apt description. Throw in organist Kari Luna, bassist Alex Cuervo, and drummer Steve Adkins, all with impressive credentials of their own, and you have a beautiful MC5 meets Aretha Franklin supergroup. Watch for Today, and watch for this album, you need it.
