intro
Atmospheric and cinematic fourth album of electronic ambience for Grouse, the project of Dublin-based musician Ronan Carroll
Strangely named and starting as an insomnia-inspired side-project, Grouse has very quickly become the atmospheric and cinematic main musical outlet and passion for one Ronan Carroll, , whom incidentally has been to three World Cups. With three albums, two EPs, a plethora of remixes and a six-piece live band to his name, he now releases his fourth offering 'Interpolate'. Grouse combines organic and electronic sounds, delighting the ears of those ambient-loving folk and downright 80's kids just like me. 'We Want To Be Loved,', Grouse's debut, received positive press and the streaming figures for Grouse on one site spiralled to over six million. It's been described as “spacey, hypnotic and chilled-out” by the likes of Hot Press and “gently psychedelic” by Ambient Music Guide. But this is not just the music of Grouse on show here. There are, hidden inside this nicely packaged outing, some other wonderful artists and singers featuring several Irish singers, some of whom he has never met. Jessie Roche drifts in and out of 'Unend' and Leslie P on the brilliant Massive Attack-sounding 'Regress', followed by Jan Blanc on 'So Much to Tell'. Carroll, however, hasn’t always followed the way of the synth over the years. He cites the likes of Charlie Christian, Charles Mingus, and Miles Davis, through Led Zeppelin, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, Funkadelic, dub and reggae up to electronic artists like Peace Orchestra, Massive Attack, Ninja Tune stuff, The Orb, and Air as inspiration for his output. He has been involved in an eclectic array of musical styles and was a touring guitar player for many years in the US also composing work for film and television. It was his debut under the name Grouse, however, that prized him away from his live music background. As, seemingly overnight he began to make electronic beat-driven tracks, making use of an array of recorded live arrangement, affected by the dub style electronic music to which he was listening at the time. With the release of more dance-floor-driven tracks and a move back to his home town of Dublin, he released the 'Heads' album in late 2012 followed by 'Oslo' and a follow up EP in 2016 and now this album,.
