intro
More of the same from Californan alternative rock group Spain on their seventh album, which proves to be always a good thing
The slow burn of Josh Haden’s Spain is what initially attracted me to them way back in 1995 when his band released their debut, ‘The Blue Moods of Spain’. Over the course of twenty years it’s inevitable that tastes change but it would appear that Josh is immune to the passing of time. Not only does his music tread the familiar path of snail paced Americana and indie rock but even his face which adorns the front cover of ‘Carolina’ appears to be frozen in time, an ageless spectacled brain box in a flash suit. ‘Carolina’ feels like a re-tread from start to finish, from the spot on recollections of long lost love in ‘Station 2’ to the story telling dialogues found in ‘The Depression’ and ‘Battle Of Saratoga’ you could pick any volume in the band's back catalogue and listen to similar heart wrenching tales delivered with Haden’s sulky yet warm tones. The difference being is that this volume, ‘Carolina’, is the most recent. And you know what I am okay with that. In fact I enthusiastically await more of the same in a year or two.
