intro
Excellent second album from anthemic Manchester-based indie-rock outfit Darktown Jubilee
Manchester-based indie-rock outfit Darktown Jubilee's debut album, 'The World, The Flesh and The Devil', which came out back in March 2013, was one of my favourites from that year. Darktown Jubilee formed in 2010 and have quickly built up a strong reputation. The four-piece band consists of David Boardman (vocals and guitar), Stuart Day (bass), Matt Sale (drums) and Al Roberts (lead guitar) and 'City of Light', their second album, is a melodious mix of 80's style power ballads and guitar-driven indie rock influenced by bands such as U2, New Order, the Smiths and Snow Patrol. They combine on it strong hooks and anthemic choruses with edgy guitars and some lovely retro synths. David Boardman has said, “The album has been recorded over the last few months over at our regular studio in Wigan and has been a joy to make. It’s been a real collaborative effort with everyone pitching in ideas, and I think you can really hear that in the tracks …we’re very proud of it. The first single, ‘Falling Down’ was kind of an obvious choice as it’s got a great hook and when we’ve played it live people have always picked it out saying they love it!” While 'Falling Down', which is the opening track on the album, is one of itshighlights, the whole album is first-rate. The CD package comes with a small booklet with tracklisting and credits along with some stunning photography from Trevor Palin. This is another splendid collection from Darktown Jubilee.
