intro
Hypnotic and sinister-sounding debut EP from mysterious Norwegian singer, Farao
This is the debut release from Norwegian songstress Farao. Comparisons have been made to beguiling mystery of Radiohead and the haunting quality of PJ Harvey, but Farao also brings that intangible Nordic sound that is thankfully getting a wider audience these days. All the tracks have a sense of organic roots, nature and a windswept landscape about them that I have noticed in other artists such as Moddi. 'Tell a Lie' is carried by hypnotic acoustic guitars and accordion, paired with a heartbeat-like drum and percussion that invokes rain drops the first track is immediately arresting. 'Skin' is haunting and slightly uncomfortable, while 'The Hours' is wistful and slightly spooky with it's ghostly choir. 'To Sleep Apart' is dark and raw. You can hear the squeak of fingers on a fret board, the unexpected sharpness of the noise catches you off guard and adds to the sinister vibe of the song. In some ways the four tracks conjure images for me that wouldn't be out of place in a dark indie flick. This is the start for Farao, but I am confident there is a lot more to come and, I for one, can't wait to hear it.
