intro
Exquisite orchestral pop on debut album from former Le Grand Magistry front man Matthew Edwards and his band the Unfortunates
A resident of San Francisco now, ex-pat and former Le Grand Magistry front man Matthew Edwards delights his Californian pals in quintessentially English types of melodic new wave pop tunes. 'The Fates' is an almost immaculately orchestrated pop album, and combines this with the occasional sturdy strumming of guitar snares. Featuring heartfelt ballads, such as a song about actress Sandrine Bonnaire, 'The Fates' veers towards melancholy, but does this with grace and strength though. In the absence of a truly stunning song, the album relies on its overall quality and the general mood it transpires. Matthew Edwards' soft, whispered singing makes for a very amiable listen. 'The Fates' is a tender album , but is ambitious in its lyricism and composition. The album offers exquisite soul-searching in its often classy orchestration. Do not expect cheap thrills and instant hits.
