intro
Haunting five song EP from Glasgow-based folk singer-songwriter, Anna MacDonald
Ark Magazine described folk singer and songwriter Anna MacDonald as having "an angelic vocal tone so hair raising, it's like walking down a cobbled street with a Scottish breeze sneaking up your neck." I don't think I can better that to be honest. This 5 track EP is released 6th August and combines haunting love songs with poetry and drama. Opener 'Paper Flowers' showcases that angelic tone perfectly. The accompanying piano and flute is spare allowing the plaintive lyrics to shine - "Please don't send me flowers/I hate to watch them die/Their true beauty is how much they are alive.' 'Matty Groves' as done by Fairport Convention is one of my favourite songs by that particular folk group and MacDonald's version is not a carbon copy by any stretch. 'Glasgow Rain' is an ode to Glasgow. Glasga needs more odes written to it. There is beauty to be found even in a deeply industrial landscape. 'Naj's Song' makes a little less impact, the very pure tone and clarity of MacDonald's voice feels slightly swamped by the multi tracking backing vocals. 'Banks Of Inverurie' closes this EP. At just over 16 minutes long it is a small but perfectly formed EP.
