intro
Wonderfully downbeat latest single from durable, but overlooked Bristol-based indie pop group the Experimental Pop Band
'Little Things' is the kind of song that car radios were invented for. Such is the instant appeal of its subtle melody mixed with Davey Woodward's wonderfully downbeat vocal delivery and clever lyrics about the difficulties of depression. The interplay of guitar and keyboard give it a modern yet retro feel that almost convinces you that it's a reworking of an old 80's classic. Of course it isn't - Davey was happily belting out his own songs back then as frontman of the cult indie-band the Brilliant Corners - but it is so catchy that it does trigger something in the brain. It is a song that a re-formed Blur would auction limbs for and puts a whole raft of current indie chancers to shame. The Experimental Pop Band are no newcomers though, with the sixth studio album, 'Vertigo', of a seventeen years and counting career due to appear in April. Thankfully it is only a slight progression from the impressive, if overelooked, 'Tarmac & Flames' (2004) and 'Tinsel Stars' (2007)that saw the band return to making more straight-forward pop records, but with the added vimpetus of a PR campaign, 'Vertigo' could well put a deserved spotlight onto one of Britain's finest songwriters and largely undiscovered groups.
