intro
Understated, but compelling vinyl only single from Swedish folk pop artist, Tula
Not that I am complaining but it becomes rather predictable; each time there's a freebie in the mail from Static Caravan, I play it and my ears go 'yes, more please' Swedish singer-songwriter Tula immediately demands attention on 'Don't Say A Word', which will become available from the end of May on 7 inch vinyl and other formats. I do not know how to read music notes, let alone how to play an instrument or to sing, but Tula intrigues me in all such ways as there is so much wizardry going on here. This single features three originals that at first sound like modest try-outs, yet quickly drag the listener in. The title track is based around some Chopin piano play and features equally elegant vocals. The repetition in the next track 'Yes' transposes modern composing into fragile folk-pop. A very subtle twang carries what in essence is a lullaby. The Tula formula is explained by Tula on the last track, again called 'Tula'. The harmonic vocals and the gently bleeping synthesizers set out for a recital of words, or to be more precise, hums. I just wonder whether there'll be any justice to all the music that Tula have released so far. Get the seven inch vinyl single while you can. Only four hundred have been pressed.
