Pearls, if my memory serves, are created from a little bit of grit. To sooth the irritation within the oyster coats the irritant in layer after layer of iridescent perfection. Pearl the singer, is anything but irritating, but the analogy holds up because under the smooth, polished and powerful voice there is a lot of grit. The voice is as huge as the hair but whether its rocking out (to the equally liberally coiffured) Tina Turner's 'Nutbush City Limits' or the Zeppelin-esque 'Broken White' she shouts and snarls and never sounds like her voice is really being stretched. She isn't a little girl playing at Rock Goddess. She is all woman and you will hear her roar. It would be easy to draw the parallels with dad Mr MeatLoaf but honestly she is more probably powerful and (weirdness aside) if Pearl, and not Cher, had duetted with the Meaty one on 'Dead Ringer For Love' it would have been transported from middle of the road bar rock to something far more stinging. If I was going to level any accusation at this album (and I wouldn't because Pearl's voice alone scares me) it would be that over all it feels like the heavier version of the 80's/90's cock rock that continues to satisfy headbangers the world over on a Saturday night between pints of snakebite...... Although that's not a bad way to spend the night.
