intro
Intriguing and thought-provoking fifth album of freeform jazz from avant-garde act the Chicago Underground Duo
With the last album, 'In Praise of Shadows', of the Chicago Underground Duo (Chad Taylor and Rob Mazurek), I felt I was actually being sent to Brazil by the sound. São Paulo to be specific. Although 'Boca Negra' - bouche noir or black mouth as you will - was recorded in São Paulo, there's no obvious sign of Brazilian jazz existentialism on it. On 'Boca Negro', Chicago Underground Duo's chill factor in freeform and deconstructionist beats dribbles onwards until 'Confliction' comes to surface with an angry trumpeteer blowing its horn. Judging by this, it sounds hardly likely anyhow that this album got recorded in São Paulo. On 'In Praise of Shadows' - one of my favourite albums from 2006 - it was the other way around, full of steaming vibes as it was, yet recorded in Chicago. Fret not, on 'Boca Negra' the latin-american touch is still there though with an emphasis on structural composition and the incorporation of both sidesteps and dissonant workouts. 'Boca Negra' intrigues, but don't expect more well oiled jazz vibes. This is more food for thought.
