intro
Captivating and magical psychedelic-influenced Euro pop on debut album from Danish group, Oh No Ono
Danish quintet Oh No Ono lay down their own brand of Euro-tinged electro weirdness with their latest album ‘Eggs’. With the likes of the Flaming Lips, MGMT and Caribou amongst a number of other new and older psychedelic bands enjoying a resurgence, Oh No Ono make the sort of music that comes from a very different place. They have a gentle air of pop about them is reminiscent of those acts and also of legendary ‘cookster’ Kate Bush. Their mystical and almost mischievous melodies are all brought together by the gorgeous vocals from Aske Zidore, Malthe Fischer and Nis Svoldgaard, who conjure up a fantastic sound on the first two tracks ‘Speaks’ and ‘Swim’. By the time of the third track ‘Warrior’ I was completely captivating. It crunches in with a really deep hook set against strings and then literally trips out later on to some fantastic piano music that just carries you away to another planet. Having been around since 2003 when they formed in Aalborg, they have really made a name for themselves in their native Denmark and with tunes like ‘Young’ and ‘Party’ which transcend the boundaries between mainstream pop music and the more experimental sound which they embody. They magically manage to be both innovative and forward thinking, but never overdo things and are not afraid to make a noise that even sound a little ”Abba-ish.” ‘Moss’ in particular sticks out and does really well in the mainstream with its fairy boot stomping sounds that keep building and building and taking your head up into the clouds with them. Oh No Ono are a really, really exciting band for those who like something that both sounds magical and from another place.
