intro
Mellowed out, but not entirely successful latest album from San Francisco-based one-time avant garde punks, Deerhoof
On the strength of 'Offend Maggie' one could argue that even punks ultimately will mellow out. A milder Deerhoof can still sound captivating but some of the jingle-jangle here proves misleadly. Only on the third track 'Buck And Judy' do Deerhoof find their balance , but then they lose it again on the following song, 'Snoopy Waves'. Next on the title track, Deerhoof return to form and borrow guitar licks from West African music in a nice way. 'Family Of Others' is perhaps the most surprising move on 'Offend Maggie' with its 1970's 10CC-ish pop twists. In the footsteps of their early sonic battles on snares, 'Jagged Fruit' closes off an album that is both tiresome and inspiring and which is not the first Deerhoof album that newcomers to the band should check out.

Muted tenth album from the once excellent Deerhoof, which finds the San Francisco experimentalists moving further away from their classic downbeat art rock sound into punk pop. |
