intro
Anthony Strutt finds hard work Shane Meadows's new film, which set in the rundown part of north London of the title, tells of the friendship between a British and a Polish teenager
The title of Shane Meadows' latest film takes its name from a rundown area of north London at the back of Euston and Kings Cross and just before you get to Camden Town. The film , which is set there, is a study of two teenagers and, shot mostly in black and white, is partially in Polish with English subtitles. Its main character is Tomo (who is played by Thomas Turgoose, who also played the lead character in Meadows' previous film, 'This is England'). He is not a character that you can love, but you do feel sorry for him. After he meets up with Marek, the son of a Polish railway worker, the two penniless tearaways get involved in various scrapes involving drinking, robbing and wanking, and at one point fall in love with a waitress. The score by two members of Clayhill is dark but suits the images on the screen. 'Somers Town' only lasts about 70 minutes, but is hard work all the way. The final scene, which is shot in colour, is, however, at least a happy one.
