intro
Especially poetic new single from Morrissey, which, while appearing on his recent 'Greatest Hits' album, is actually a new track
The new single CD from Morrissey has been manufactured to look like an old school Decca Records seven inch. Sadly Decca have screwed up on this as most of the copies of it are stuck in the sleeves and you can't take them out to play. My copy did after something of a fight and after I had worked my way through about 30 copies in HMV and found one that actually wanted to be heard. ‘All You Need is Me’ is the second single from last year's ‘Greatest Hits’, but is actually a new number. It is a good solid Morrissey track that starts off sounding grungy, but finds our Stephen at his most poetic. This song instantly put a smile on my face as it is just so typically Morrissey. Others may instantly hate it for exactly the same reasons. Modern-sounding in tone, it is Northern in style, sounding a little bit like the Arctic Monkeys. Its B side is another new song called ‘Children in Pieces,’ which is slow but moody, a tale of an Irish childhood, and which is backed by a rockabilly beat which assists very well the main tune. There are also two seven inch versions with exclusive B sides. One is a live reading of David Bowie's ‘Drive In Saturday’, recorded in Nebraska in May 2007. The other features another new song called ‘My Dearest Love’, which is moody and again Northern in sound, and, something like a slow ‘One to Another’ by the Charlatans, very reflective and mature and far too good to just be a mere B side.
