intro
American-born Celtic folk/punks Flogging Molly recently toured Britain to promote their new DVD 'Whiskey on a Sunday'. Anna Gudaniec photographs them exclusively for Pennyblackmusic at the Mean Fiddler in London
Often seen as having come from Ireland, seven piece Irish folk/punk group Flogging Molly in fact took their roots in the United States when former Fastway acoustic guitarist/frontman and one-time Dublin native Dave King formed the band in 1997 with fiddle player Bridget Regan, guitarist Dennis Casey, accordion player Matt Hensley, bassist Nathen Maxwell, drummer George Schwindt, and mandolinist Bob Schmidt. The band started out playing as the house band at Irish bar Molly Malone's in Los Angeles, before they began touring first of all across the United States and then eventually in Europe. Floging Molly released their first album, 'Swagger', on Side One Dummy Records in 2000. Their second album, 'Drunken Lullabies', came out in 2002. Flogging Molly have since gone on to release another album, 2004's 'Within a Mile of Home' and in July of this year a DVD documentary 'Whiskey on a Sunday' (reviewed elsewhere) and which came accompanied with with a ten-song CD of acoustic and live tracks. The group have garnered a fiery reputation for putting on passionate and energetic live shows. These photographs were taken by Anna Gudaniec at a show at the Mean Fiddler in London on July 25th as part of a European tour to promote 'Whiskey on a Sunday'.
