intro
Very impressive second EP from excellent Australian indiepop act the Bank Holidays, which has been released on Lost and Lonesome, the label co-owned by Lucksmiths bassist Mark Monnone
When I interviewed the Lucksmiths for Pennyblackmusic in Malmö more than two years ago, bass player Mark Monnone mentioned the label he is running with a friend, Lost and Lonesome. At that time, they had released the Essex Green’s fantastic album 'The Long Goodbye' in Australia, and I knew they would be worth checking out. But somehow I forgot all about it, until this promo arrived in the mail for me from Pennyblackmusic last week. The Bank Holidays were formed in 2003 by two Australians, James Crombie and Bekk Reczek, while they were on holiday in Norway. Two more members joined them when they got back home to Australia, and voila! A band! In September of 2004 they released their first EP, ‘Good Looks to Camera’, on the Lost and Lonesome label, and a year later this, their second record, became available to the public. You want to know what it sounds like? Well, imagine the best of the 60’s pop scene, and make it contemporary. Oh my, I just realized how boring that sounded. OK, maybe this sounds better: jangling guitars, tambourine, fantastic harmonies, trumpets, strings, flutes. There you have it! And add to that very good melodies and clever chord changes and you have the Bank Holidays’ latest record. I’m already looking forward to the next one.
