intro
Refreshingly "relevant" and "of-the-minute electro-techno workout" from dance maestro Terry Scott, aka Percy X
The third album proper from Percy X (aka Terry Scott, aka X Man) 'Where’s The Music' is an of-the-minute electro-techno workout that struts around the edges of the dance floor like that kid back at school who was a little bit cooler than everyone else, and knew it. A minimalist bass murmur underpinned by bobbling breaks opens the proceedings on 'Find Yourself'. Genre-clashing is clearly the order of the day as Club X unleashes a heady Chicago-house-meets-Blue-Monday-era-New-Order bump fest, and the stand out 'On A Day' is an oddly uplifting marriage of low, quasi-industrial techo hum to dubby house beats. Welding together the smooth sound splices is a dollop trend du jour, synthcore, which could sound forced and – worse – pretentious, but doesn’t. Such is Percy X’s assurance that the musical ‘80s references sound fresh, relevant, and even necessary Although the production is constantly deft, 'Where’s The Music' still sounds a bit thin in places, the sounds fitting together smoothly enough but failing to ignite. Live, this would be remarkable; on disc it is merely unimpeachable.
