The London based label, Bella Union, has further expanded its reputation for seemingly endless musical creativity with another amazing record. 'Special' is the third single of the duo Violet Indiana, which consists of former Cocteau Twins member, Robin Guthrie, on guitar and Siobhan de Mare on vocals. The group, since it formed only last year, has, as well as those two other singles 'Choke' and 'Killer Eyes', already put out its first album 'Roulette'. 'Special' develops further Violet Indiana's sensual sense for music. 'Jailbird', the opening track, has a very delicate lyric which and, as with all honest statements, confesses very deep feelings. Calming music helps to guide it , and the song is rounded off with a short message which Siobhan leaves to her loved one. While 'Jailbird' exposes its spirits boldly , the following track 'Poppy' is more introspective . Robin's melodic guitar glows strongly with every swing of his finger across its strings. The vocals then waft around the music with relative innocence. The last two tracks are similar in character because of their self-consciousness. While the vocals on 'Sky' are used to build up the music, the two are more closely collaborated together on "Chapter 3. Fast drum beats hit in regularly on the latter track and make the sound mysterious. Siobhan's reserved voice adds to its persuasive force. Songs by Violet Indiana, no matter how different they are, have an individual authority that is always recognizable to the band. This brand new single 'Special' is faithful in its name in description of its music. Simply, it's special.
